Apa itu SUBJUNCTIVE?

Kebanyakan pembelajar bahasa Inggris tahap dasar/basic learner akan kebingungan dengan pola subjunctive dalam kalimat dikarenakan polanya yang tidak normal. Normal??? 😀 Coba lihat aja polanya dalam kalimat, for example: It is necessary that he find the books.  Kalimat tersebut true or false? The answer is true. Kenapa benar, kan di situ ada subject berupa ‘he’? Harusnya kan ‘he finds’. Mau nanya gitu kah? 😍
Ok. Let’s discuss togather what subjunctive is and how to use subjunctive.

Dalam buku ‘Cliffs TOEFL’ ditulis seperti ini “The subjunctive in English is the simple form of the verb when used after certain verb indicating that one person wants to another person to do something”. Kita fokus ke kata kunci yang sudah ditebalkan untuk memudahkan pemahaman kita pada definisi subjunctive. Ada simple form of verb (bentuk sederhana dari kata kerja), certain verb (kata kerja tertentu), dan to do (perintah untuk melakukan sesuatu). Jadi subjunctive digunakan ketika dalam kalimat terdapat kata kerja yang mengindikasikan seseorang ingin orang lain untuk melakukan sesuatu.
For example: I ask that he do his homework right now.
Nah, di kalimat tersebut ada certain verb yang menunjukkan bahwa kalimat tersebut merupakan subjunctive yakni ‘ask’. Sehingga menimbulkan rangkaian kata ‘he do’ tidak berbuah menjadi ‘he does’.
However, dalam subjunctive kata ‘that’ harus ada pada kalimat, jikapun dihilangkan maka verb tersebut akan menjadi infinitive verb.
I ask him to do his homework right now.
Sekarang verb apa aja yg termasuk dalam subjunctive verb. Ini dia:
-          Adevise – ask – command – decree – demand – insist – move – order – prefer – propose – recommend – request – require –stipulate – suggest – urge
Ini rumus subjunctive jika ada kata kerja tersebut

Subject                        +verb               +that    +subject           + (verb in simple form)…
                        (any tense)

Example:
-          The doctor suggested that the patient stop smoking.
-          The university requires that all its stucents take this course.
Selain itu, rumus subjunctive juga berlaku ketika ada ungkapan yang mempunyai makna sama seperti kata kerja tersebut (certain verb of subjunctive).
Inilah adjectives (kata sifat) yang masuk dalam subjunctive:
-          Advised – important – manditory – necessary – obligatory – proposed – recommended – required – suggested – urgent – imperative

Ini rumus yang berlaku apabila ada adjectives di atas:

It         +be                  +adjective       +that    +subject           + (verb in smple form)
            (any tense)

Example:
It is important that you bring the paper.
It was urgent that she arrive at home.
It has been proposed that we take the chance.
